My links are divided into three sections:
General Links
Sites of general interest--some art-related, some not.
Artist's Sites
This section is dedicated exclusively to other sites like my own--those of artists displaying their own work. Beyond that, these are artists whose work I like, whether in terms of technique, or meaningfulness, or the outlook on life it presents--or all three.
Webrings
Webrings to which I belong.
And here's a graphic you can download to use as a link to me, if you'd like. I ought to make some others, but this is what I have for now.

GENERAL LINKS

The Aesthetic Avengers

"The Aesthetic Avengers is a federation for individuals--primarily artists, but also estheticians and any other interested parties--who consider themselves to be, in the broad sense, what Ayn Rand referred to as 'romantic realists', or who consider themselves to be in agreement with the basic esthetic principles outlined on the web-page 'Apollo's Soabox'."

Well, Apollo's Soapbox no longer exists...but you can read The Romantic Manifesto by Ayn Rand to find out what "Romantic Realism" is, and (by extension) whether this site might be of interest to you.

Atlas Shrugged
Read an excerpt from my favorite novel, Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. For that matter, it's my favorite artwork of any kind, period.

Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty

Have you been led to believe that the acheivement of a muscular physique and radiant physical health require hours of exercise every day? According to Mike Mentzer, former Mr.Universe, it takes less than three hours a month. Mentzer perfected his Heavy Duty training system through his experience with training thousands of clients, and the strict application of the laws of logic. I can personally testify that I've made consistent, significant strength gains since starting his system, and without the grueling hours and resultant fatigue I used to experience with the typical "3 sets of 10 reps" approach. Well, I could go on and on about how great I think Mentzer is--and in fact I have, in my tribute Man of Thought, Man of Action. I've also written a piece about Heavy Duty in relation to idealism and moral ambition: The Best of Everything. And, Mentzer has a couple of my essays on his site: The Joy of Living in One's Body and Bobybuilding, Metaphysics and Art.

John Eliot Gardiner
Gardiner is the leader of the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, whose breathtaking recordings of Beethoven's nine symphonies are the absolute prize of my CD collection. In Gardiner's own words: "Nothing can diminish one's sense of excitement...and nothing can diminish the sense of terror and awe at being confronted by this indomitable man [Beethoven] and his extraordinary creations."

Abraham Maslow
"Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again." Maslow was one of the founders of the "humanist" school of psychology. In glaring contrast to the "disease-centered" orientation of the Freudians and the "value-free" orientation of the behaviorists, the focus of his work was "self-actualization"--the state reached by those who have realized their full human potential and grown to maturity, courage, wisdom, and creativity. The link above will take you to a brief summary of his life and work. There's also an official Maslow Publications site, but all it has is a list of his published stuff. My favorite Maslow books are Motivation and Personality and The Farther Reaches of Human Nature.

Alzofon Art Institute: Shade, Light & Form Modeling
This is by far the best explanation of light and shading for the visual artist that I've ever seen. Alzofon defines her terms very carefully and makes some delicate but crucial distinctions. Take the time to study this, and you'll gain a very principled understanding of the interaction of light and form.

ARTIST'S SITES

Van Oostrom Fine Art - Romantic Realism

Paintings by Theo Van Oostrom. Many of his works have a sense of vast, clean, open space that I quite like.

Aimee's Studio: Original Artwork, Animation and Tutorials

Aimee Major is currently a student at the California Institute of the Arts, where I studied animation. Her site is the hub through which I discovered the thriving on-line community of cartoon/fantasy/sci-fi/anime/anthropomorphic, Adobe Photoshop/Corel Painter-using type artists (she maintains a very extensive directory of links). You can see two of her student films, as well as a whole lot of drawings, at her site. Also, she hosts a fun forum!

JB's Online Portfolio
John is a graduate of the super-rigorous Classical Animation program at Sheridan College in Ontario. There's some great life-drawing here, and I find his layouts particularly incredible.

Scribbled Spaghetti

What can I say? Tochi draws like a pro. This is the kind of work that inspires me to get up and give it everything I've got! Rah!

Eden's Island

No one draws a smile like Cindy Kinnard! She recently graduated from the San Francisco State University with a degree in Theater Arts, and she specializes in costume design.

Ylla's Art Gallery

Ylla's work has the kind of lively, playful draftsmanship that requires genuine courage and confidence, not to mention tons of practice, to develop. Her drawing skills are really solid!

Loes Soup

"She's only fourteen?!" That's the reaction most people, including me, have when they see the art of Marloes de Haan. The stuff I was doing at that age was nowhere near as good as her work. I think she does a particularly good job with facial expressions, and especially eyes. And, her rate of improvement is positively dizzying.

Enayla
Linda Bergkvist, a.k.a. Enayla, is quite an accomplished Photoshop artist. She has a detailed tutorial at Wacom's European website, and often posts new work at Dhabih Eng's forum.
