Pride and the Crown is the film I made as a freshman in the character animation program at CalArts. For better or worse, it represents almost four solid months of the most intense effort I've ever expended in my life...so far. It was made just over four years ago, and though my drawing abilities have improved considerably since then, it remains one of my most significant achievements.
You can see it here as a Quicktime movie. Unfortunately, the file is enormous; the original film was shot through two layers of backlit animation paper, so it has a good amount of "grain," and the pencil lines are sometimes faint--all of which meant that the movie wouldn't tolerate much compression without becoming illegible. (If you have any tips for making it smaller, I'd sure be interested.) So, I've also included the first scene on its own in case you'd like a taste before committing to the whole download.

One note: the Quicktime movie does not include the soundtrack, mostly because I don't have the copyright-holder's permission to use it. (As of now, I haven't even attempted to get their permission, just out of laziness...maybe I ought to.) But, if you're interested, the soundtrack consisted of the beginning of the first movement of Rachmaninoff's First Symphony. (Remember that commercial with the U.S. Womens' Soccer team--"Then I will get two fillings"? Well, it's the same piece of music they used for that.) As I recall, I didn't decide on using that music until I was almost done with the film, but it fit very well, both thematically and rhythmically.

Oh yeah, one other thing...as the credits indicate, my name was Steve Clark when I made this film. But it's still me! (I decided to change my last name to Clarian because I wanted something a little more, well, distinctive.)
